Introduction

This Cookie Policy explains how Forestaller (“we”, “us”, “our”) uses cookies and similar technologies when you visit or use https://forestaller.app (the “Service”).

Our goal is simple: we use the minimum technology necessary to provide a secure, reliable, and helpful experience.

This policy is designed to comply with:

  • EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR)
  • South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA)
  • Mauritius Data Protection Act 2017 (DPA 2017)

What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. Similar technologies include local storage, session storage, SDK identifiers, and tracking pixels. They help websites remember information about your visit and provide a more personalized experience. Common uses include:

  • Function properly
  • Remember preferences
  • Improve performance
  • Analyze usage
  • Provide secure authentication

Cookies may be:

  • Session cookies – deleted when you close your browser
  • Persistent cookies – stored for a defined period
  • First-party cookies – set by us
  • Third-party cookies – set by services we use

Why We Use Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies for the following purposes:

Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are essential for the secure operation of Forestaller and do not require consent under GDPR/PECR.

  • Authentication and session management (Supabase)
  • Security and fraud prevention
  • Load balancing and infrastructure reliability (Netlify)
  • Remembering your cookie consent preferences

Without these cookies, the application cannot operate securely.

Functional Cookies

These cookies remember preferences such as theme or configuration settings. Where required by law, we obtain your consent before using them.

Analytics Cookies

We use analytics tools managed via Google Tag Manager (GTM) to understand how users interact with the Service and improve performance.

  • How users interact with Forestaller
  • Which features are most useful
  • Where improvements are needed

These cookies are only enabled where you provide consent (where required by law).

Error Monitoring

We use Sentry for application monitoring and error detection. Sentry does not set advertising cookies but may collect diagnostic technical data (such as device type, browser version, and error logs) to help us improve reliability.

Third-Party Services Used

  • Supabase (Authentication & Database)

Supabase may store authentication tokens (such as access and refresh tokens) in cookies or browser storage to securely manage login sessions.

  • Netlify (Hosting & Infrastructure)

Forestaller is hosted on Netlify. Netlify may use strictly necessary cookies to ensure site security and performance.

  • Google Tag Manager (GTM)

GTM is used to manage scripts and analytics. GTM itself does not typically set cookies; however, cookies may be set by tools deployed through GTM. These tools are activated only after consent (where required).

  • Sentry (Error Monitoring)

Sentry collects diagnostic information to detect and resolve errors. This may include IP addresses and device data necessary for debugging.

Legal Basis for Processing

Under GDPR and UK GDPR:

  • Strictly necessary cookies: Legitimate interest and/or contractual necessity
  • Analytics and marketing cookies: Consent

Under POPIA (South Africa):

  • Processing is conducted lawfully and in a reasonable manner that does not infringe privacy.
  • We process personal information for specific, explicitly defined purposes.
  • Where consent is required, we obtain voluntary, specific, and informed consent.
  • Data subjects have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of personal information.

Under the Mauritius Data Protection Act 2017 (DPA 2017):

  • Personal data is processed lawfully, fairly, and transparently.
  • Processing is limited to specified, explicit, and legitimate purposes.
  • We collect and process only data that is adequate, relevant, and not excessive.
  • Where required, we obtain clear consent before placing non-essential cookies.
  • Data subjects have rights of access, rectification, erasure, and objection in accordance with the Act.

Managing Your Cookie Preferences

When you first visit Forestaller, you will be asked to set your cookie preferences where required by law.

You can change your preferences at any time via the “Cookie Settings” link available on our website.

You may also disable cookies through your browser settings. Please note that disabling strictly necessary cookies may prevent parts of the Service from functioning.
